Tips to Save Energy
Reduce your energy bills and your impact on the environment.
Fossil fuels have largely met Australia’s energy needs. Coal and gas accounted for around 70% of electricity generation in 2021 [1]. Australia is also the world’s largest exporter of coal [2]. Coal accounts for more than half of Australia’s energy exports.
When fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) are burned for energy, they release large amounts of carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas) into the air. The burning of fossil fuels is the largest contributor to climate change.
Reducing energy usage helps reduce the demand for fossil fuels and lowers carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere.
How can you help save energy?
At Home
– Hot water, heating and air-conditioning can be a large part of your energy bill. Set your hot water thermostat to 60ºC. In summer, set your air-conditioning to between 23ºC and 26ºC. Remember to turn your heating and cooling off overnight.
– Turn off lights when you leave a room.
– Don’t leave appliances on standby – turn them off at the switch.
– Buy appliances with the best energy efficiency rating that you can afford (Check out the Energy Rating Label website to learn more about how to choose a new appliance: https://www.energyrating.gov.au/label)
– Install energy efficient lighting
– Install a water efficient shower head.
– Only run the washing machine or dryer on full load. Use cold water to wash clothes and spin them thoroughly before drying.
– Allow space for a washing line so you can use the sun to dry your clothes.
– Invest in an efficient hot water system— either solar, gas or heat pump.
TIP: You may be able to get a grant or rebate for energy-saving equipment that you install in your home. Visit the Australian Government’s Energy website (www.energy.gov.au) for details about grants and rebates available in your state or territory.
At Work
– Turn off computers at the end of the day.
– Turn off power to equipment and lights when not in use.
– Turn off screensavers and install standby on computer equipment (screensavers do not save energy!)
– Install energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs.
– Close all windows and doors when air-conditioning is on.
– Use natural ventilation and fans wherever possible.
– Ensure photocopiers, computers, printers and other equipment are switched off at night, at weekends and during holidays.
– Print only when necessary.
